Sprint today released WebCapTel, a service that displays word-for-word captions of calls on a web browser. The new free service is expected to help an estimated 23 million Americans with hearing loss, who may face challenges hearing over the telephone.
With WebCapTel, users can make and receive calls on their own telephone, cell phone, landline, or even an amplified phone. During the call, if they have difficulty hearing what is being said, they can log into www.sprintcaptel.com and read written captions of everything their caller speaks. Captions appear virtually at the same time as the person speaks, letting users to enjoy a natural telephone conversation.
Sprint WebCapTel will capture the audio of the person speaking to the user and change the spoken sounds into words to read. When displayed on a web browser, the user can change the font size, color, and even background. When a call is completed, the user can save the captioned conversation for later review, allowing the user to concentrate on being involved in the conversation.
The free service is available for Sprint customers the United States and within US Territories. However, calls to or from international locations, such as Canada or Mexico, are not available.

New research has estimated that over 2.6 billion mobile tickets will be delivered to just over 208 million mobile phone users by 2011. This is one of the key statistics from a landmark study by Juniper Research. The report found clear evidence that the sector is gearing up for major launches over the next few years. Early trials, mainly led by mobile network operators, are now migrating into commercial services that are controlled by the ticketing issuers themselves.

So the rep from Meizu, much like the company as a whole, continues to profess their design didn’t come from the iPhone, that their design was completed some time towards the end of 2006, well before the iPhone was released. They still don’t mention anything about the software though, which is almost definitely stolen from Apple.

Yahoo! announced it’s OnePlace Mobile Content Manager today. The Yahoo! OnePlace feature will allow you to store all your photos, videos, feeds, search results, etc. all in the same program, which is appropriately called OnePlace.
The new Yahoo! OnePlace will also let you group different files together in say a “Vacation” folder. This will let you plan a trip to Maui and put all your mobile content for the trip in that one folder (itineraries, hotel info, best beaches, etc.). It’s a pretty neat little feature. But, it will not be available until Q2, 2008.

You can now get Google Gears Mobile for Windows Mobile 5+ smartphones. Google Gears is a program that allows you to use web-based applications even when you don’t have web access. After you download the new program, you’ll be able to use applications like Zoho without being connected to the Internet.
For now, Google Gears is only available on Windows Mobile smartphones (version 5 or later), but they claim to be working on other platforms as well. It’s a pretty neat feature, maybe it will make your life a little less frustrating when you walk into a network dead zone.
