Updated “To Read” List

Mar 10, 2008 Filed under: Uncategorized

I’m doing pretty well in the reading department this year. Even though we’re still in early March, I’ve already read (or listened to) 12 different titles. Unfortunately, not many of them have been classics, so that’s something I’d like to work on. I most recently completed Playing for Pizza by John Grisham, but haven’t written up my review yet. I’m also in the middle of yet another Agatha Christie book (Towards Zero), which unfortunately, is pretty boring. I’ve got two Christie reviews queued

The Danger Of Typecasting

The Danger Of Typecasting March 9th, 2008 When you categorize large groups of people into simple groups, misunderstandings often result. Lining up folks by party affiliation is no different. So when the Review Journal quoted me as saying “Democrats tend to run a little bit more on emotion than on intellect” at yesterday’s Clark County Republican Convention, I wondered what I would find in my inbox today. Sure enough: Republicans tend to run off a bit on the mouth, and you have the biggest

Miranda July, Two Ways

Mar 9, 2008 Filed under: Uncategorized

The first time Miranda July's name came onto my radar was about a year ago, when she did that clever PR thing for her forthcoming book. (I had read her short story "Something That Needs Nothing" in the New Yorker in September 2006, but it didn't make a huge impression on me, so I didn't take note of her name.) Then, last summer, she had another story in the New Yorker that knocked my socks off: "Roy Spivey." It was about a woman who sits next to a movie star on a plane; his name is "almost an a

I have a constant flow of apps in my inbox and in Firefox tabs, waiting to see if they are worth a review. Most of the time, when an app is unusable or has major bugs, I just delete it and move on. But I had two apps in a row last week that this happened with, and I realized it's a symptom of a larger problem with many Web 2.0 start-ups. The two apps I tried using were SyncWizard and Andanza, and the first crash and burn I had was with SyncWizard. Touted as an online backup tool for your PC, i

With more and more options available on today’s cellular phones, it is not surprising that there is a class of phone only affordable by the super rich. A few years ago it may have sounded crazy to spend several hundred dollars on a cellular phone, however, now there is no limit to the amount of money you can end up spending to have the latest and greatest in cell phones.

The Trouble with Sprint

Mar 9, 2008 Filed under: Uncategorized

Sprint is in financial trouble and the word is getting out. It is possible that with all the problems sprint is having that they may be subject to a buyout in the near future. T-Mobile’s parent company Deutsche Telekom could possibly become the new owner of Sprint sometime in the months or years to come. In the case of a price war between companies such as Sprint and T-Mobile, this could be the result. Sprint has already tried to undercut the competition with price cuts, trying to please new customers so they’ll stay… but things are not looking too good.

Americans are famous for their talkative ways and with this bit of information it is not surprising that Americans are finding new ways to communicate with one another even in situations in which talking may or may not be appropriate. Instant messaging along with other forms of digital communication and usage are becoming more and more popular as well as more and more common in the daily life of an American.

Lakeland Online Forums

There was much discussion yesterday among local journalists about comments to their online articles. The gist: commenting is great, the comments not always so. Commenting on local articles used to mean "Letters to the Editors." They were never anonymous, usually short, often edited by the paper, and rarely rambling. None of which is typical for online comments. The local papers all allow semi-anonymous comments to their articles and on their forums. They require registration with an email addres

A few days ago, I wrote about the details of my financial turnaround, going from a big mountain of credit card debt to enough financial freedom that I can actually chase my dreams of being a writer and spending much more time with my children. I would have never been able to do this without a handful of elements in my life, things that made such a transition possible. Here are the ten key things I used to turn the ship around. AIR BART (4/5) on Yelp.com

Mar 9, 2008 Filed under: Uncategorized

AIR BART Category: Public Transportation Neighborhood: East Oakland Convenient, and relatively cheap. A shuttle runs between the Coliseum BART station and OAK every ten minutes. It's a low-body bus with luggage racks. These days it just makes one stop halfway between the two air terminals, so the routine is very simple. It costs $3, exact change, each way. We considered taking a van home, to save us some trouble. At the "reserved van" stand the clerk directed us to the rese

SuperShuttle Category: Airport Shuttles Convenient and courteous. SuperShuttle had a booth and a kiosk at Kansas City International. Vans picked up passengers for the Hyatt Regency Crown Center every half hour, and there was a published schedule for the return trip. Both drivers, downtown and back, handled their vehicles smoothly. They were surprised and grateful when they received a tip. The return trip was easily reserved by phone, one day before. Besides credit card paymen

Lunchbox Laboratory 7302 ½ 15th Ave NW Seattle, WA (206) 706-3092 Being anonymous and imperious in the way of restaurant critics, one evening in 2002, I picked up some take-out from The Blue Onion Bistro in the Roosevelt neighborhood. Ordering over the phone, I used the name, "Dr. Rodriguez." (God, I loved being a restaurant critic! I'm judgmental and imperious like my mother; I'm gluttonous; the food was free, and I could feel OK about pawning myself off as a doctor. What a gig!) As

Hello From Middx

Mar 9, 2008 Filed under: Uncategorized

Hi all Just making an introduction here. I've used Symbian S60 and UIQ phones for years (and Psion PDAs before that) and the only time I've been anywhere near Windows was with a Sharp Mobilon 4500 (running WinCE2) some years ago - cost me nearly a grand IIRC. I've finally decided to "jump ship" and buy a WM PDA/phone as my current Nokia E70 is (literally) held together with sellotape. I'm going to go "sim free" to avoid any network crippling (I always end up paying Vodafone for anyth

There Will Be Blood

Mar 9, 2008 Filed under: Uncategorized

I went to the movies Saturday afternoon. I don’t go to the movies very often, for good reason. But I had a free ticket, so I chose There Will Be Blood. Anyway, great movie. Worth watching just to see the last 10 minutes actually. But this isn’t a review. The movie is very very long. About an hour in to it, the people 2 seats away from me obviously started to get bored - low attention span I suspect. So they begin to chat. Quietly, but just enough whispering and giggling to get on my nerves an

Review-iPhone Download Pro

There are a lot of iPhone download sites out there, all claiming to give the best service(and most are full of crap), but how do you know which ones are the best from all the rest?

If you have purchased an Apple iPhone and just been absolutely blown away by it capabilities and applications that come standard, just imagine what you can download on to it.

Will Sprint Sell Out?

Mar 9, 2008 Filed under: Uncategorized

Sprint to SellWell, I thought the $99 Unlimited offering from all the major U.S. wireless providers was a good thing. Apparently not. Let’s not forget than whenever there’s a winner, there’s a loser, and when consumers have it as cheap as they have it at Sprint, well then, Sprint is the loser.

Sure, it’s only rumor for now but in the wireless world, rumors have an odd way of coming true. The logic is that price wars are not healthy for companies and bigger wireless providers will most likely buy out smaller wireless providers to avoid a price war and any prolonged bleeding in revenues. The scuttlebutt is that T-Mobile, which is owned by the very rich and very powerful Deutsche Telecom, is getting ready to buy out Sprint. So, does three sound better than four?

Web 2.0 Language Learning: Virtual Worlds, Social Networks, Mashup Assessments The short answer to the question of whether or not you can really learn a language in a virtual world or using Web 2.0 applications instead of going the traditional route and signing up for face-to-face language courses or moving to a new country can be summed up in two words: SOMETIMES, and, YES. What makes some Second Life language experiences effective? What makes having a virtual mentor effective? To sum it up

McCain/Clinton ‘08

Mar 8, 2008 Filed under: Uncategorized

It's ridiculous for Hillary Clinton to continue to praise John McCain and the lifetime of experience he'll being to the White House, reinforcing that only Republicans can steer the national security ship, and I have no problem denouncing and rejecting that right-wing frame. It's an argument she'll lose in November, and then we'll be playing on Republican turf, trying to not talk about the war and emphasize kitchen-table issues, which has sunk us in numerous elections. Also, when the Republican

Here’s a firsthand look at it; click to enlarge, and then just take your time to look at the thing and think about it: On the right there is a normal-sized TI-30-something scientific calculator. That should give you an idea of the scale. Here’s another shot with me holding it, which should also give an idea of the size of this thing; and another sh

I often hear this refrain from authors. "I don't like to market." Or "I'm an introvert and don't like to speak in public." Or this one, "I'm a writer and not a marketing person. I'm going to spend my time in the craft of writing." Now don't get me wrong, it's important to learn the craft of writing and I encourage such action often in these entries on the writing life. Yet it is also important to learn the skill of promotion and marketing. It's a huge pain--and I feel that pain personally--yet
