Japan’s Sharp has sold 10 million one-seg phones in its first two years in the mobile TV industry. It’s a milestone that even Apple would envy. Of course the Japanese are also great customers for mobile TV.
The ten million milestone was achieved with 23 different models from Sharp, a warning for Apple, which will make its iPhone 3G available through the Japanese number three carrier Softbank.

June, 4 - Softbank showed off the latest waterproof Sharp 824SH and Panasonic Tropical 823p phones at an official launch party in Japan yesterday. Softbank demonstrates the operation of Panasonic Tropical 823p phone in water, as captured in the photo above.
Sharp Waterproof 824SH is only 15.3mm thick, which makes it the world’s slimmest waterproof 1seg cellular phone. Surprisingly, Softbank spokesman said that the waterproof phones are designed to target women.

“Many of our customers started subscribing to our service because they were attracted by the advanced capabilities of our handsets and our reasonable fee system,” President Masayoshi Son said. “Therefore, the ratio of female users has been slightly lower compared with our rivals.”
As a result, SoftBank Mobile launched a project to develop handsets targeting women about a year ago. When the company conducted a survey on functions that women are seeking, the request for “waterproof function” was higher than any other functions including 1seg and GPS, it said. That is because many women said they “wanted to write email while bathing.

Synaptics announced today that its ClearPad solution is driving the interactive touchscreen in NTT DOCOMO’s new SH906i clamshell handset. Sharp SH906i is the first ClearPad-enabled touchscreen mobile phone in Japan’s mobile handset market.

The SH906i uses Synaptics’ ClearPad technology to enable finger-input character recognition capabilities for Japanese character entry. The combination of the SH906i character recognition software and Synaptics’ ClearPad solution improves usability for regions with more complex alphabets. Capacitive sensing-enabled text entry allows the user to access and control any number of applications and menus on a handheld device in an efficient and intuitive manner. Synaptics’ ClearPad sensors recognize a variety of gesture input for an effortless user interface. OEMs can customize their device user interfaces using Synaptics’ growing gesture library, which includes gestures such as flick and pinch. The SH906i, for example, uses flick to flip though channels and adjust volume on its mobile-television application.
The ClearPad solution is part of Synaptics’ growing ClearTouch product portfolio. Patented ClearPad technology builds on the capacitive touch sensing technology used in more than 400 million TouchPad devices.

Sharp will start sending out the sample unit next week and start the mass production from July.
Last week, Sharp has announced that it had achieved the world’s highest power density, 0.3W/cc, for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) for mobile equipment. This new technology enables efficient power generation from a small cell volume. Thus, the use of this technology can make it possible to develop fuel cells that have almost the same volume but a longer continuous.

An example of mobile phone powered by fuel cell
Because fuel cells use energy produced by the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, they have a small impact on the global environment. Also, fuel cells are expected to become the next-generation power generating devices because of their high generating efficiency that comes from converting chemical energy directly into electrical energy. In particular, DMFC have a simple structure in which power is generated through a chemical reaction between methanol supplied directly to the power generation part and oxygen in the air, making them suitable for miniaturization.
In the future, through continuing to pursue the development of this elemental technology, cell volume can be further miniaturized, and the creation of cells with the same volume but a longer lifespan than the currently mainstream lithium-ion batteries can be achieved.
