Truphone today launched a beta of its mobile internet telephony service, Truphone Anywhere, for BlackBerry smartphones. When an international number is dialled, the Truphone software detects what is happening and takes over automatically. Truphone Anywhere will then make a domestic call to local Truphone server and sends to the server the international number being called. The Truphone server then makes an internet call to that number and connects that long-distance internet call with the domestic call the customer pays only for the call to the local Truphone server.

Truphone for BlackBerry smartphones is available to download for free from www.truphone.com/blackberry. Alternatively, Handango users may also download Truphone from www.handango.com.
Truphone today launched a beta version of its VoIP client called Truphone Anywhere for BlackBerry smartphones. It’s a cheapest way to make international calling to up to 40 million BlackBerry users across the world, can reduce international call costs to as little as £0.03/$0.06 per minute.
Truphone Anywhere works in 33 countries worldwide. “There’s no GSM business tariff that gets close to the prices we can offer BlackBerry users with Truphone for international calling,” said Geraldine Wilson, new CEO of Truphone.
This client is available to download for free from www.truphone.com/blackberry or www.handango.com for Handago users. There are no monthly subscriptions or other charges.

A new Short Message Service (SMS) text messaging application for BlackBerry phones that permits both personal and business users to send self-destructing text messages and pictures, has been released by BigString Corporation. In addition to providing BigString’s self-destructing features to SMS text users, the application also permits sending self-destructing messages to multiple recipients through the application’s group feature and sending graphic rich messages including animated emoticons. The new application is called SMS Eraser.

The self-destruction timing of messages is determined by the sender. A message can be set to self-destruct in as little as fifteen seconds or after a set number of views. BigString’s BlackBerry SMS Eraser is currently priced at $29.95 and can be downloaded at http://www.bigstring.com
“Our BlackBerry SMS Eraser allows the fast-growing mobile messaging market to use our self-destructing text messaging and picture applications,” stated Darin Myman, President and CEO of BigString Corporation. It’s a big news for Apple’s iPhone fans, I guess. Your lovely mobile device has surpassed RIM’s BlackBerry in unit sales for the quarter — with over 6.9 million units against 6.1 million. That’s all? No. Another good news: in terms of overall profitability, Apple is the third largest competitor behind Nokia and Samsung, and ahead of both LG and Motorola.
Research In Motion (RIM) today announced that the company is working on a new online application storefront and a new on-device application center for managing installation, upgrades, and purchases blackberry applications.

RIM plans to launch the application storefront in March 2009 and BlackBerry application developers can begin submitting their applications and content for inclusion in the storefront in December 2008. The storefront will allow developers to set their own prices for applications and developers will retain 80 percent of the revenue generated from their applications. RIM is working with PayPal to provide consumers with a convenient and trusted way to pay for applications within the new application storefront, right from their BlackBerry smartphone.
RIM is also working with its carrier partners to provide carrier-customized, on-device application centers to help foster after-market application downloads. The BlackBerry application center will allow each carrier to offer a convenient catalog right on the device where a customer can discover and download applications.

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--Mike Lazaridis, Research In Motion's co-founder and co-CEO, has just given the 700 registered developers at the first-ever BlackBerry Developer Conference sound but strange advice. The key to successful BlackBerry development isn't just good programming, Lazaridis told the room, it's physics.
Very specific physics, it turns out. Lazaridis pointed to an image of a box with the words Bandwidth, Capacity, Performance, and Battery Life, written in each corner. These are the four principles of BlackBerry's "physics," he said. If developers push too hard to achieve high broadband speeds, for instance, capacity drops. On individual devices, there is a trade-off between battery life and performance.
"This is one box that it's wise not to think outside," Lazaridis joked.
Lazaridis' insight is one reason that scores of developers have gathered at the Silicon Valley conference. Another is meeting with technical experts for hands-on advice to ready their applications for the sleek BlackBerry Bold and touch-screen BlackBerry Storm--slated to hit stores within the next few weeks--and for the BlackBerry application store--anticipated to debut in March 2009.
