Apple Cell Phone Reviews

App Store users angered over sudden price changes respond in the reviews.

(Credit: CNET Networks)

When Konami's Frogger popped up in the iPhone App Store early Wednesday, the $9.99 price tag immediately set off a firestorm of angry user reviews. Apple's review system has doubled as a forum for users who find bugs, or otherwise feel the need to vent about the shortcomings of various developer-built applications.

The rather exorbitant price tag for a 26-year-old software title has been met with overwhelmingly negative reaction from potential customers, even though it's been rewritten to include iPhone-hardware-specific controls using the accelerometer and touch screen. Similar offerings that have started out at the same price point have succumbed to outspoken users and have issued price drops.

On the other end of the spectrum, there's something very different going on with developers who have offered their applications for free. They've found a fairly simple way to work Apple's own ranking system to their advantage. Since developers are able to change their price point at any time, some have offered early versions of their applications free of charge then switched the price over once it reaches a critical mass.

Why I Still Don’t Love Apple

Aug 3, 2008 Filed under: Apple

I bought an iphone a couple weeks ago. As you can see from my review, I think it’s a terrific device. One of the things that made it so appealing was the Application Store. Basically this is an iTunes-based interface for developers to distribute their creations for the iphone and ipod touch. There are apps for everything. Games, search utilities…I even have the complete works of Shakespeare. And lots of this stuff is free. The whole App concept was a reversal of what Steve Jobs had said a year

If you're one of the many waiting for Apple to get its act together and offer a copy/paste feature on the iPhone, there's a promising development called MagicPad from software creator Proximi. It's an application similar to the notes tool that ships with the iPhone. The big difference is that it's got support for multiple fonts; rich text elements like underlining, italics, and strikethroughs; and the much-wanted copy/paste.

It manages to do all this by adding a small toolbar over the iPhone's onscreen keyboard. Using the small loop magnifier you can highlight strings of text, then copy them into a virtual clipboard. From there it can be pasted into other notes, then sent off. Unfortunately you can't carry the clipboard to other applications, which is what most people are hoping Apple will provide.

Posted after the break is a video of the yet-to-be-released application in action, which was made by AppleiPhoneNotes.com. One thing that might keep MagicPad from making it onto the device is if it does not meet Apple's stringent human interface guidelines, which protect things like the keyboard configuration to keep the end user from getting confused.

  • Motorola sued a former executive for allegedly violating a non-compete agreement by taking a job as head of global iPhone sales for Apple and helping Apple hire two other former Motorola employees.

The suit was filed Thursday in an Illinois circuit court in Cook County against Mike Fenger, who quit Motorola in March as senior vice president of mobile devices for Europe, Middle East and Africa to join Apple.

The suit alleges that Fenger accepted "millions of dollars in cash, restricted stock units, and stock options" in exchange for agreeing not to join a competitor for two years after leaving Motorola. "In his new position he cannot perform his duties for Apple without inevitably disclosing Motorola's trade secrets," the lawsuit states.

Fenger, who now serves as vice president of global iPhone sales, also hired away two high-level Motorola employees who have access to Motorola's trade secrets and customer relationships. The suit didn't name the two employees he allegedly helped Apple recruit.

Motorola asked the Cook County court to stop Fenger from working for Apple for two years and to bar him from soliciting or hiring Motorola employees or disclosing Motorola's confidential information. It also demanded damages and repayment of stock options given to him ...
