In New York, some Apple fans were miffed that the first people waiting in line for the iPhone 3G were activists hoping to stir up publicity for a cause. But don't you think they would've been even more ticked off if those first spots in the line were ...
Apple iPhone 3GApple has issued an iPhone software update to help fix connection problems that led to a flurry of online complaints from customers.
The iPhone 2.0.2 software update "improved communication with 3G networks," said Apple spokeswoman Jennifer Bowcock. Apple did not acknowledge a problem until Tuesday, and then provided few specifics about what, exactly, Monday evening's software update was designed to fix.
The iPhone 3G, which went on sale July 11, uses third-generation networks to deliver faster web surfing and online video viewing than the year-old original model. But some customers have complained about dropped calls and inconsistent Internet speeds, with the phone often reverting to a slower technology known as EDGE even in 3G areas.
Bowcock would not say which of the many possible ...

It's all better now.
(Credit: Corinne Schulze/CNET Networks)Yay! Apple's iPhone 2.0.2 software update has fixed our broken iPhone 3G. Its endless loop of system restores is over, and it's now back in working order.

Apple has released iPhone OS 2.0.2 with its obligatory, but unhelpful, release notes indicating only "bug fixes."
Unfortunately, a resolution to widespread, frustrating 3G reception issues is not among those fixes. In fact, some users have reported that the update manifests poorer 3G reception than 2.0.1, ...
Just about 2 weeks after the 2.0.1 software update, Apple seems to have more bug fixes awaiting with the new iPhone 2.0. The new iPhone 2.0.2 software update is available via iTunes now, no change log is available though.

iPhone 3G: Worth the wait?
(Credit: Corinne Schulze/CNET Networks)When the Apple iPhone 3G first made its global debut on July 11, Apple stores around the world experienced a cavalcade of technical glitches, mostly due to server meltdowns that weren't able to handle the amount of in-store activations. Days after the phone's debut, there were still long lines at Apple stores across the nation, as people waited patiently for the second-generation device.
Last Thursday, I decided to jump into the iPhone fray. As an Apple fan and a gadget aficionado, I've wanted one for some time, but just couldn't justify the lack of features of the original iPhone. Now that the iPhone 3G has the 3G and GPS functionality I wanted, I figured it was time. Despite the concerns over buggy software and battery issues, I wanted to have a firsthand experience to make my own mind up about it. So I went down to the local Apple store in San Francisco Thursday evening around 5 p.m.
Already, there was an iPhone line outside the store. I was fourth in line, and there was an Apple store employee outside, asking and answering questions. He ...

In a press briefing Friday, Auction.ph--one of the country's pioneering auction sites--unveiled a special program to put the new iPhone for sale at an online auction.
(Credit: Auction.ph)
"It is a promo for our loyal users and online merchandisers," said Angelo Hernandez, public relations chief at Auction.ph. The executive said Auction.ph will initially auction off one iPhone 3G unit, with a starting price of "only" 1 peso (2 cents), at bidding increments of 0.5 peso.
Hernandez said the company expects a "lucky" bidder to snare the iPhone 3G--which goes on sale in the Philippines on Friday, August 22--at a cost far less than the announced price tag of the mobile device.
The appeal of purchasing the phone on the site, he said, is that Auction.ph already has a "fixed" price range for the iPhone 3G, from 1 peso to 5,000 pesos ($110). The price range is considerably cheaper than the ...
It's been just a month since the App Store hit the streets, and the number of applications has skyrocketed. That doesn't mean they're all winners though. The vast majority are downright useless, buggy, or simply overpriced. Heck, some have even been removed by Apple because of all-around lameness. Since our inaugural list of absurd iPhone apps was a big hit, we've picked another group of 10 that are even more absurd than the first ones.
1. GottaGo
Price: $1.99
This is one of those apps you hope is some sort of sick joke. Designed to get you out of a bad date or an awkward conversation, you can use GottaGo to ring you up with a fake phone call that looks real to your unsuspecting date. All you have to do is set the time like you would an alarm and it will call you, with faked caller ID and everything.
Why it's absurd: Be a decent human being and tell someone when it's just not working. They'll probably respect you more and it'll tie things up better than trying to explain why your apartment being on fire means you'll have to skip dessert.

Straight from the horse's mouth: Apple's iPhones do indeed have the capability to check for, and potentially defang, software that Apple deems unfit for the iPhone.
