Apple Investors Nix the VIX

Apple is in a very nice position to deflect the wrath that has succumbed so many other companies. And why is that? Well it comes down to the magic triad; lots of cash, zero debt, and growing demand for its products. The only thing Apple doesn’t have going for it is dividends. But Apple more than makes up for that through strong, sustained growth and fanatical demand for its products. Just look at what’s happening to all the other computer manufacturers, cell phone manufacturers, and software v

Apple dropped the iPhone NDA

Oct 1, 2008 Filed under: Apple

It’s a great news for iPhone developers. Apple has dropped the non-disclosure agreement for released iPhone software.

To Our Developers

We have decided to drop the non-disclosure agreement (NDA) for released iPhone software.

We put the NDA in place because the iPhone OS includes many Apple inventions and innovations that we would like to protect, so that others don’t steal our work. It has happened before. While we have filed for hundreds of patents on iPhone technology, the NDA added yet another level of protection. We put it in place as one more way to help protect the iPhone from being ripped off by others.

However, the NDA has created too much of a burden on developers, authors and others interested in helping further the iPhone’s success, so we are dropping it for released software. Developers will receive a new agreement without an NDA covering released software within a week or so. Please note that unreleased software and features will remain under NDA until they are released.

Thanks to everyone who provided us constructive feedback on this matter.

Yeah, it’s a great evolution: iPhone, iPhone 3G, and the coming version: iPhone EVDO. A leading Apple blog posted a rumor that the iPhone — which is currently available in the United States only through AT&T Wireless — could be coming to Verizon, in a form of CDMA/EVDO version, perhaps as early as January 2009.

Cleve Nettles of 9to5Mac wrote:

We’ve fielded a couple of tips (some more sketchy than others) about EVDO iPhones floating around Cupertino in the past, but today’s tipster seems a little bit more sure of himself.  Besides having some Verizon insider credentials, he seems to know way too much about Verizon-Apple politics.  According to him, Apple will be announcing iPhones for Verizon Wireless in 2009, perhaps as early Macworld 2009.  Negotiations between Apple and Verizon are ongoing but they expect to hammer out agreements by the end of the year.

And he also added:

There is no reason why Apple wouldn’t also be chatting with Sprint and T-mobile about possible deals as well.  We welcome some carrier competition in the US iPhone field.

Over the weekend, Apple quietly implemented a new policy -- only people who actually purchased a paid application can review it.

This week's top Apple news ranged from how the iPhone will be affected by the T-Mobile G1 to performance improvements in Adobe CS4 to Apple's continued enforcement of its mysterious App Store policies. Also included was how Apple's patch release policy affects enterprise IT, and more.

Apple has made a vital change to the App Store, in order to review an app you now have to actually have downloaded it first. All I have to say is… it’s about time! This brilliant idea (that should have been in place since day one!) means we no longer have to read reviews from people who have never tried the app out.

China Mobile might be asking Apple to take out the 3G (and also Wi-Fi) capabilities from iPhone 3G. What??? The reason is, just to ensure its customers stay within its network.

CNET wrote:

China Mobile wants Apple to ship an iPhone in China with the Wi-Fi and 3G chips disabled. Why take out the fast networking chips that make the iPhone shine, you may ask?

Competition. China Mobile plans to build out a 3G network based on a homegrown Chinese standard for third-generation networks that is not compatible with the widely used W-CDMA standard that is also expected to be used by China Mobile competitor China Telecom.

So why doesn’t Apple team-up with China Telecom instead, rather than risks their own iPhone 3G?

Apple online store in Hong Kong now start to sell unlocked iPhone 3G directly to consumer. According to the product description, the iPhone 3G can be activated with any wireless carrier through iTunes 8. The 8GB iPhone 3G and 16GB iPhone 3G are being sold at 700 USD and 800 USD.
