Apple today unveiled tools for outside developers to make software programs for its iPhone, a move intended to widen the appeal of the multifunction device. Previewing the iPhone 2.0 software, scheduled for release this June, Apple announced the beta release of the software, offering new enterprise features such as support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync to provide secure, over-the-air push email, contacts and calendars as well as remote wipe, and the addition of Cisco IPsec VPN for encrypted access to private corporate networks.

"We're excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community with potentially thousands of native applications for iPhone and iPod touch," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "iPhone's enterprise features combined with its revolutionary Multi-Touch user interface and advanced software architecture provide the best user experience and the most advanced software platform ever for a mobile device."

In a move that anyone even remotely familiar with Apple could have seen coming from miles away, even with the SDK Apple wants complete control of what Apps make it onto the iPhone and iPod Touch and complete control of distribution. I don’t think this tidbit has been confirmed, but how likely is it Apple is going to open up any portion of their business model?

Refurbished AT&T Apple iPhones are now on sale with a 2 year contract. The prices of the refurbished AT&T Apple iPhones will be $199 (4GB) & $249 (8GB). Of course, Apple has been offering the used handsets for a while now, but AT&T has not offered them at their stores.

So, if you were thinking of getting an iPhone, you may want to think about a refurbished AT&T Apple iPhone - they’ll work just fine (they’re under warranty), and are a lot cheaper. Apple replaces all non-working parts, and even parts that just look bad.

So, when is the 3G Apple iPhone coming? Well, according to recent rumors, the 3G Apple iPhone may be available by the middle of this year. It actually wouldn’t be a huge shock, seeing as Apple would like to sell as many iPhones as humanly possible.

Here’s a good how to guide for iPhone v1.1.4 Jailbreak and SIM unlock guide. This iPhone jailbreak and SIM unlock guide will work with any firmware version you’ve got installed. The one catch is that you will not be able to use Google Maps My Location feature when you unlock your iPhone. But, read on if you want to go ahead an unlock it anyway.

How to jailbreak iPhone v1.1.4 and SIM unlock:

Connect your iPhone to iTunes.

Hit the “Update” button.

Let your iPhone do it’s thing. Go grab a soda or something, it’s going to take a while.

Download iNdependence 1.4 beta 5 here.

Put iNdependence in your “Applications” folder.

Start up iNdependence.

Go to the “Jailbreak” tab and hit the “Perform Jailbreak” button.
If you want to unlock it, go to the “Activation / SIM” tab and hit the “SIM Unlock” button.

To activate your iPhone, goto the “Activation / SIM” tab and hit the “Acivate” button.

That’s it! You’ve now got a jailbroken iPhone with v1.1.4

Apple may consider selling the iPhone unlocked or, at least, in another way besides giving exclusivity to one carrier per country.

The Apple iPhone has been experiencing relatively lukewarm sales since it launched in Europe, complemented by equally lackluster turn over in the U.S. Despite it, Apple still expects to sell ten million units this year. Apple COO Tim Cook assures a group of Goldman Sachs investors that their target would be met, reasoning that “Apple is not married to the single, exclusive-carrier model,” which apparently will lead to increase sales.

It is not wholly surprising should Apple begin selling iPhones unlocked or distribute them to other carriers. There have been hints of a possible change in the iPhone business model. For one thing, Apple does not seem to interested in fighting back against unlockers, releasing the 1.1.4 update for the iPhone, which, according to users of unlocked iPhones, caused no harm their jailbroken unit.

A new Apple iPhone haptics app allows you to get the small vibrations on your iPhone when it’s touched. Is it worth getting the Apple iPhone haptics app? I guess it’s up to the individual user. While it may be a fun feature to have, it does use up your battery life faster.

Someone made an analysis of Australian law, particularly Australia’s competition law. The iPhone has undergone a similar challenge in Europe but in Australia, iPhone’s practice of only letting one wireless provider distribute the iPhone under a two-year contract might actually stick.

Dale Clapperton and Stephen Corones of Queensland University of Technology believes the iPhone could be illegal in Australia if it is distributed in the same way it is distributed in the U.S. and Europe. They published their analysis at the QUT Law And Justice Journal. Australian competition law allows handset lock in but not in the way Apple does it with the iPhone. Much of the price of other handsets are subsidized by wireless carriers in exchange of a contract. It does not work the same way with the iPhone. Apple, in fact, gets a significant cut of the subscription earnings.

“Where the carrier has not subsidised the cost of the phone, there seems to be no legitimate pro-competitive justification for locking the phone to the services of that carrier, especially where that locking is permanent and not just for the duration of the initial contract,” the article said.

You can get the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch firmware upgrade v1.1.4 starting today. The iPhone / iPod Touch firmware upgrade is available via iTunes 7.6.1.9 - it seems to be paving the way for an SDK coming up in the next few weeks.

Also, the new iPhone and iPod Touch firmware upgrade does not seem to affect jailbroken handsets - meaning your unlocked phone should still work fine after this upgrade.

No one knows exactly if firmware 1.1.4 paves the way for SDK but it is now available. The update is all of 162.1MB, so besides the bug fixes Apple must have something bigger in store.

For legitimate AT&T iPhones and iPhones subscribed to their exclusive providers in Europe, there has been no reported problems so far. GFor unlocked iPhones, there has no report of upgrade problems. Jailbroken iPhones still work with the upgrade, and it has been reported that ZiBri jailbreak works as well. So has Apple finally given up on jailbreakers. Are unlocked iPhones coming next?

It looks like we’ll soon see support for Flash on the AT&T Apple iPhone. The new iPhone SDK, which is due to release in around a week, will very likely have upgrades to support Flash Player. Now, you may wonder why Apple didn’t add Flash support for the AT&T Apple iPhone in the first place. Well, it’s most likely because Apple and Adobe are not on the best of terms. They’ve been feuding somewhat over the last few months over different issues.

But, hopefully this all comes to pass and we’ll be able to access mobile Flash on our AT&T Apple iPhone handsets in the very near future. Judging by how many flash based programs are out there these days, we’ve certainly been missing out.

HOW-TO

Step 1: Create an Ad-Hoc Network

Leopard has the ability to easily create ad-hoc networks on-the-fly. You’ll
need to create one of these so that the iPhone and your notebook can share
a WiFi network connection.

To create an ad-hoc network, click on the airport icon on the menubar in
Leopard. Select “Create Network…”. You will be prompted to “Create a
Computer-to-Computer network”. You can name the network anything you like -
we will use “Tethering”. Once you have named it, click “OK”.

NOTE: The iPhone appears to have difficulty connecting to an ad-hoc network
that is password-protected (e.g. WEP encrypted). You’ll want to avoid
requiring a password to join the network.

Found this on YouTube. The iPhone has been available in Asia for quite some time. The hardware isn’t much but the software has some interesting innovations that Apple would do well to learn from. I like the menu bar on the left, which reminds me of the widget dock on the new Samsung TouchWIZ UI. The tactile screen buttons directly at the button of the screen gives you quick access to Menu, Messaging, Phonebook, Calling and Music Player. The Iphone needs refinement but it works well enough to make this blogger believe that OS X is not the only user-friendly mobile OS in the market.

The Apple iPhone display screen seems to be bubbling on many handsets. These small bubbles are pretty annoying as they can make it hard to see something on your display screen. Well, luckily Apple is on the ball with this one.

No, don’t try fixing this problem yourself, all you have to do to fix your Apple iPhone display screen bubbling is take it to a Apple retail outlet. They’ll fix it no questions asked (or replace it). Pretty impressive customer service, but hopefully they’ll be able to fix this issue in future iPhones that are sold.

The iPhone and iPod Touch may soon get support for Flash Player. The devices has a dedicated app for YouTube, which converts videos to H.264 format for the iPhone and iPod Touch, but neither supports Flash files natively. Some people, understandably, do not have Flash at the top of their list of priorities. Apple opted for a dedicated YouTube player instead, perhaps, allowing users more use of the battery while still enjoying one YouTube. The new virus that attacks the Safari browser of the iPhone and iPod Touch is similar to the previous virus. The virus exploits a vulnerability in Safari via a Denial of Service. When you browse to a site containing the malicious script, the virus is triggered eating up memory in your iPhone or iPod Touch and causing it to crash. There’s no word from Apple yet.

The new virus has been predicted and more vulnerabilities in the iPhone and iPod Touch are likely to be exploited once the SDK gets implemented. All new 16GB iPhones and 32GB iPod Touches are affected by the virus as well as devices with 1.0.2 up to 1.1.3 updates.

If you’re wondering how you can create free Apple iPhone ringtones, look no further than GarageBand software. First thing you need to do is upgrade to the latest version of GarageBand, which is 4.1.1, then restart your computer.

OK, now that you’ve got the latest version of GarageBand, creating free Apple iPhone ringtones is a breeze! Here’s what you need to do:

1. “If you’re using a song from your iTunes library, just open GarageBand, open iTunes, and simply drag and drop the song from iTunes to a new track in GarageBand.

2. Click the Cycle Region button pictured above, which will activate the region loop tool.

3. Now adjust the length of the region to the section of the song you want to export to iTunes as a ringtone (40 seconds long or less), again as pictured above.

The 16GB Apple iPhone looks ready to land at AT&T’s stores very soon. The 16GB Apple iPhone has been rumored about since the 16GB iPod Touch, but nothing had happened until now. Now we are all but certain this thing is real and may be coming in the next few days/weeks. You can expect the new phone to sell for around $500.

EngadgetMobile has more: “We just got a pair of tips purporting inside AT&T info that both point to the 16GB Apple iPhone showing up shortly. One person spotted the phone in AT&T Wireless inventory, listed as not in stock, while the other tipster was fairly certain about a release this Tuesday or the next one.”

Of course, we don’t recommend you sell your 4GB or 8GB versions yet - unless you feel like taking the risk of being iPhoneless for a while.

We’ve been on the look out for the 16GB iPhone since MacWorld 2008. When Jobs didn’t mention one we were hoping it’ll come up after a few days. Apple didn’t disappoint, putting the 16GB up at the Apple store. A new 32GB iPod Touch is on sale as well. Both will retail for $499. As far as storage, the 32GB iPod Touch is a real bargain Upgrading from 16GB to 32GB for only $100 sounds like a Valentine’s gift. As for the iPhone, another 8GB doesn’t seem like a worthwhile investment for a $100 premium, but that’s just me.
